The new central market was completed around 1964 in Jalan Wong Ah Fook.  Sungai Segget still remained central to the lives of Johoreans. However, when the causeway to Singapore opened, roads and railway transportations became more popular and lesser people used the river as a medium of travelling and transporting goods.
