As more ships began stopping by Johor, or Tanjung Puteri as it was known back then, more local residents began trading with these passersby. The Johor Market was established around this time, where settlers could buy and sell goods. Sungai Segget now functioned as an enabler of transportation and trade for local residents as well as foreign traders. The name Segget comes from the English word “sea gate”, a structure prevalent in Johor in the 1900s.
